Quinta do Panascal has been open to the public since 1992, one of the first to be so in the Douro valley region. Quinta do Panascal is now Fonseca’s flagship estate. As well as being an important contributor to the blends of the classic Fonseca Vintage Ports, for over thirty years Quinta do Panascal has also produced distinctive single estate Vintage Ports made exclusively from the best produce of the property. As well as being shipped to markets around the world, these wines can also be purchased in the estate’s shop. Visitors are welcome at Panascal throughout the year for a tour of its vineyards or to watch the wine making during harvest time.
Panascal’s educational audio-tour allows guests to wander independently through vineyards dramatically situated atop rolling hills overlooking Távora River. The audio-tour also includes the “lagares” (traditional granite tanks) on a 30 minute walking experience.
This self-guided audio-tour allows visitors in their own time to visit the vineyards and is available in 9 languages – Portuguese, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Danish and Japanese. In the visitor’s room, which has a superb view of the Távora valley, guests will taste three Fonseca’s Ports: Siroco (extra dry white Port), BIN nº27 and Tawny 10 year old.
Our visitors’ centre also offers a variety of Ports by the glass including old Tawnies and the first fully certified organic Port so you can discover the diversity of Port Wine. You can also ask for a refreshing “Siroptimo” (Siroco and tonic) or, should you prefer, reserve a tailor-made tasting including some excellent Fonseca Vintages.
During the grape-harvesting season, visitors can enjoy the unique experience of watching grape treading in the “lagares”, where Fonseca Port wine is still produced in the traditional way.
We also have a small wine shop where the full range of Fonseca’s Ports may be purchased, as well as an outstanding organic olive oil.
The two Pinhão Valley estates of Quinta do Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António, have supplied Fonseca for over a hundred years. Quinta do Panascal in the Távora Valley has a more recent association with Fonseca, but its wines perfectly complement those of the two Pinhão Valley properties as well as producing an exceptional single-quinta Vintage Port made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate.
The unique terroir of each quinta contributes its own distinctive character to the Fonseca Vintage Port blend. Cruzeiro provides the dense core of black fruit and tannin. This is enveloped in the rich succulent jammy flavours and velvety texture of the wines of Panascal and overlaid by the exotic heady scents of Santo António. The fusion of the wines of these three diverse properties explains the multi-layered and multi-dimensional quality of Fonseca Vintage Ports and their ability to continue releasing surges of opulent complex aroma over decades of ageing in bottle.
Fonseca’s estates have also witnessed pioneering developments in organic and sustainable viticulture in the Douro Valley. Quinta do Panascal was one of the first properties in the valley to contain areas of vineyard with organic certification. Quinta de Santo António has been completely converted to the prize-winning sustainable vineyard model developed by the firm’s viticulture team and is certified for organic production of both grapes and olive oil.
